Majority Rule!
Why can't California balance it's budget?
Because we don't have Majority Rule.
Since 1978, California has experimented with a two-thirds rule for passing
legislation regarding revenue and budgets; that experiment has failed.
A minority of Republicans has been able to hold our budget hostage, and
tie our hands when it comes to meeting the needs of Californians.
Its time to restore majority rule, and let democracy work. Majority rule will
allow the legislature we elect to do their jobs, and make government work.
Leadership in the Democratic Party has shied away from facing this problem. They fear defeat, because polls show
the public resistant to overturning the two-thirds
rule. But a small grassroots movement
has taken up the challenge.
With the help of George Lakoff (messaging guru and author of Don’t think of an elephant), this group has filed a
proposition to restore majority rule.
The California Democracy Act, a proposition one sentence long.
“All
legislative actions on revenue and budget must be determined by a majority
vote.”
To win wide support for majority rule, we need to see poll numbers in
favor of this approach, and George Lakoff
thinks with the right message—we can!
Let’s stand up for our values and provide for the future of California. Help support the cost of running the
George
Lakoff poll, and volunteer to help get The California Democracy Act on the 2010
ballot.
